Short answer: A courier with a sole proprietorship faces three tax obligations: each month you pay VAT, calculated on your earnings minus the VAT on your expenses; you pay provisional tax quarterly; and you file an annual income tax return in March. On top of these, a Bağ-Kur premium is paid every month. Tax is calculated not on gross earnings but on the profit left after documented expenses and Bağ-Kur premiums.
The question couriers ask most is "How much of what I earn goes to tax?" This guide explains each tax, works through a hypothetical example under the 2026 tariff and shows the dates to track during the year.
1. VAT: calculated monthly, the difference is paid
VAT is added on top of your earnings on every invoice you issue to the platform. The standard VAT rate is 20%. This amount is not yours; you collect it from the platform and pass it to the state. When you buy fuel, maintenance, spare parts and phone services with invoices, you deduct the VAT on them as "input VAT". At month end, VAT payable is:
VAT payable = VAT charged on earnings − VAT paid on expenses
In the example, TL 10,000 VAT is charged on TL 50,000 earnings; after deducting TL 2,600 input VAT, TL 7,400 is payable. A courier who collects no expense documents would pay TL 10,000 that month. Use our VAT calculator for your own amounts.
Some platforms may apply VAT withholding under the contract. If so, the platform pays part of the VAT directly to the tax office and your payable amount falls. Check the platform's instructions before invoicing.
2. Income tax: on annual profit
A courier's earnings are business income subject to income tax. Expenses and Bağ-Kur premiums are deducted from the year's earnings (excluding VAT), and the remainder is taxable profit. Tax is progressive: in the 2026 tariff for non-wage income, the first TL 190,000 is taxed at 15% and the band from TL 190,000 to TL 400,000 at 20%; higher brackets rise to 27%, 35% and 40%.
The annual return is filed in March and the tax is paid in two instalments, in March and July. Try the tariff with your own numbers using our income tax calculator.
3. Provisional tax: paying in advance during the year
Provisional tax is the advance payment of annual income tax in quarterly periods. It is calculated on each quarter's profit and filed in May, August and November. Provisional tax paid is offset against the tax on the annual return in March; any excess can be offset or refunded.
4. Bağ-Kur premium
Bağ-Kur coverage starts with your tax registration. In 2026 the minimum premium base is TL 33,030; on this base the monthly premium is TL 11,808.23, or TL 10,156.73 with the 5-point discount for those who pay on time and have no debt. Bağ-Kur premiums are treated as an expense in calculating profit. See Bağ-Kur premium 2026 for details.

Example: one year's tax calculation
The table below is based on an entirely hypothetical scenario, intended to show how the items affect each other. Real amounts depend on your earnings, expense documents and circumstances.
| Item | Monthly | Annual |
|---|---|---|
| Earnings (excl. VAT) | TL 50,000 | TL 600,000 |
| Documented expenses (excl. VAT) | TL 13,800 | TL 165,600 |
| Bağ-Kur premium (discounted, minimum) | TL 10,156.73 | TL 121,880.76 |
| Taxable profit | — | TL 312,519.24 |
| Income tax | — | TL 53,003.85 |
| VAT payable (example month) | TL 7,400 | Varies by month |
In this example, annual income tax equals about 8.8% of earnings excluding VAT. Without expense documents, taxable profit and therefore tax would be much higher. We explain which expenses you can deduct in which expenses couriers can deduct.
Calendar for the year
| Obligation | When? |
|---|---|
| VAT return and payment | 28th of each month (for the previous month) |
| Bağ-Kur premium | Last day of each month (for that month) |
| Provisional tax | 17th of May, August and November |
| Annual income tax return | March |
| Income tax instalments | March and July |
If a deadline falls on a weekend or public holiday, it moves to the next business day. All dates are in our 2026 tax calendar. Late payments incur late payment interest; see the potential cost with our late payment interest calculator.
Earnings, turnover and profit are not the same
Couriers often confuse earnings, turnover and profit. Earnings are what the platform pays you, written on the invoice excluding VAT. Turnover is the total of your invoices for the year excluding VAT. Profit is what remains after expenses and Bağ-Kur premiums are deducted, and income tax is calculated only on it. The amount paid into your bank account is earnings plus VAT; the VAT is not yours and should be set aside.
Knowing this makes cash planning easier. A practical method is to move the VAT amount and an estimated share of profit to a separate account with each payout, so filing periods are not a strain.
Common invoicing mistakes
Most tax problems start at the invoice stage. The mistakes we see most are:
- Issuing the invoice long after the service period; it should match the period of service.
- Applying a VAT rate or withholding different from the platform's instructions.
- Deducting platform charges and invoicing a lower amount.
- Invoicing the same payout twice, or not at all.
A wrong invoice can be cancelled and reissued, but within certain time limits. If unsure, consult your financial advisor before invoicing.
e-Notification and tax office letters
The tax office and social security institution increasingly send notices electronically. A letter in your e-Notification box is deemed served after a set period even if unopened, and objection and settlement deadlines for warnings, inspection reports or penalty notices start from that date. Check your box regularly or leave this to your financial advisor. Documents platforms request, such as the tax certificate or a no-debt letter, can be obtained in minutes from the Digital Tax Office.
Legal ways to reduce tax
- Get an invoice or receipt in your name and tax number for every expense.
- Buy the motorcycle in your name, register it in your business and take depreciation.
- Pay Bağ-Kur on time to keep the 5-point discount.
- Document phone, line and equipment costs.
- Use benefits such as the young entrepreneur exemption if you qualify.
None of these means evading tax; all are rights the law provides. What matters is supporting each item with documents and keeping orderly records.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much tax does a courier pay?
It depends on earnings, expenses and Bağ-Kur. In the hypothetical example above, a courier earning TL 50,000 a month pays about TL 53,000 of income tax a year, plus monthly VAT differences and Bağ-Kur premiums.
Does a courier pay VAT?
Yes. VAT is added to invoices issued to the platform and declared monthly. Because input VAT on expenses is deducted, what you pay is less than the VAT shown on invoices.
Can couriers use the tradesman exemption?
Courier work with a motor vehicle usually falls outside the tradesman exemption. Conditions depend on activity and vehicle type and should be checked before starting.
Do I have to pay provisional tax?
Taxpayers with business income who keep books pay provisional tax. If there is no profit in a quarter, there may be nothing to pay, but the filing obligation remains.
Do I file a return for a month with no earnings?
Yes. As long as your tax record is open, a VAT return is filed even with no earnings that month. If you will not work for a long time, close the record or review it with your financial advisor.
Can I pay my tax debt in instalments?
Annual income tax is already paid in two instalments, in March and July. For other debts, you can apply to the tax office for deferral and instalments, with deferral interest applied.
In Short
Courier tax may look complicated, but the logic is simple: VAT difference monthly, provisional tax quarterly, income tax annually and Bağ-Kur monthly. Collecting expense documents regularly directly reduces your tax.
